Lake Washington HS

McGRANAHAN architects project: Darrin Filand, AIA - Senior Lead Designer
The new high school supports 1,250 students and 90 junior high students. Built as a replacement school for the original high school on the same site, its placement and construction phasing allowed the existing school to remain in operation during construction. The building’s design is based on small learning communities or “houses”. Each house supports 300-350 students, including multiple grades and multiple disciplines so that students can spend all four years with the same group of teachers.
Sustainable design strategies include: a 1,100 square foot photovoltaic panel array with informational performance kiosk, geothermal heating and cooling system, controlled natural daylight, rain gardens, sustainable and salvaged reuse materials.
